What happened to spring??

We're nearing end of March and we've got cold weather and plenty of snow in Stockholm. I'm looking outside the window and it's friggin snowing. We've got two inches so far today. This is unusual.  On the photo above we're standing on a frozen lake a couple on minutes walk from our place.  Yep, that's right.  There's no chance the ice on the lake will be clearing any time soon. Swedish parents like to bring their kids along for most activities.   We were reminded of that the other day when we went for a walk on the ice covered lake and were passed by a couple on their cross country skis with their toddler in a sled behind them.  The parents had a huge smile on their faces and their child was sleeping comfortably.     They say spring is coming but I believe it when I see it.

I'm really looking forward to some summer activities with Daniel.  He loves bicycles and as soon as the snow clears we'll be getting him a nice tricycle.  Our area is perfect for any kind of outdoor activity with children.  There is no traffic, tons of playgrounds, many young kids eager to play, and walking paths practically made for a kid and his tricycle.  Daniel is not tall enough to actually use the pedals but he still shuffles around which looks really fun and he seem to have a blast.  One of our absolute best buys so far has been Cochecito.  Both #1 and #2.  Cochecito is a nickname for a little plastic car we got Daniel in Mexico during our three month stay there last year.  At that time he was learning to walk so the the car offered some helpful support.  A few months later he was able to sit down  and ride short distances.  And last summer we rode for miles around the neighborhood on the little car.  Daddy walking and Daniel riding.   Always with a huge smile on his face. The car has a little compartment where we frequently find interesting items.  House keys, cell phones, car keys, wallets, and various kitchen supplies.  It's always the first place we look when anything is missing.

I guess it's a little early for Daniel to go for long rides this summer on  the tricycle but we can at least go for awesome rides on our mountain bikes.  We both love mountain biking and have a portable bike seat for  our four bikes.  It's a little extra weight with our son on the back but the seat is comfortable for him and it's great to bring him along.  As soon as he see the bike seat he runs to get his helmet and off we go.  We're of course keeping it safe and not doing any riding on single-track etc. but it's still good exercise.   Weekdays we can do shorter rides after work and weekends longer rides to our favorite spots.  Just like in the car we don't want Daniel to sit in one place too long so we take regular breaks during longer rides.  If the weather is nice we might go for a long ride with a picnic and play session for Daniel halfway.  Or stop for lunch  and stretch our legs at some of the many country side restaurants around Stockholm.

I can't wait for summer!  Now let me put on my winter shoes and take my son for a sled ride.  Hopefully one of the last for this winter

  1. Normally, I’d commiserate with you on the long winter but since you just got back from your long vacation in Mexico, I’m extremely jealous and I hope it snows in Stockholm until August! Just kidding, my friend. Great photos. Look forward to seeing more of Daniel motoring away at full-speed come Springtime.
