Weekend Photo - Time Standing Still

Weekend Photo - Time Standing Still

My dad has this very annoying habit of never throwing anything away.  It's kind of a disease.  His garage is filled with old vacuum motors, broken coffeemakers, rubber bands found all over the world, and even a dentist drill from his 30+ years as a top notch dentist.  I would be more harsh but the fact is he can fix or put together anything.  A house, car, lawn mower, toy, washing machine or anything else you can imagine.  Clothes are also saved forever, something I'm  very grateful for today.  In the photo below, my 21 month old daughter is wearing a Helly Hansen fleece which I wore in my toddler days.  That's almost 40 years ago and brings me great joy.

When I was young, Helly Hansen was known for rugged high quality clothing.  It was not the moist beautiful clothes but it was reliable, warm, timeless , and of  high quality.  The kind of stuff you wear while moose hunting, working on an oil rig, riding a snowmobile,  or climbing a mountain in cold and wet weather.  Most people don't realize it but a toddler is one of the best test subjects for any kind of clothing.  Have you spent a few days at day care with your kids?  I mean the whole day, not just dropping off and picking up?  The abuse of clothes is just incredible. The kids are doing amazing things with clothing and I don't mean that in a good way. Any clothes that can take this abuse day in and day out is hardcore.

The Helly Hansen fleece my daughter is wearing isn't especially good looking but I subjectively think it looks kind of cute. The fact that I personally wore it 40 years ago makes it very special. It still looks in good shape which is amazing.  It's not a beautiful piece of clothing but you'll find nothing better for a child on a spring or fall day.  Just add something thin underneath and you'll be find in cold and rain.

Note to myself, save this fleece so my grand kids can wear it.  That would be very special!

  1. Wow, that’s in great condition! I have this dress that my grandmother saved that I wore in one of my first photo shoots (lol!) I hope to have a daughter some day that can wear it if it’s been kept in good condition

  2. A piece of family history is just so wonderful! Erik’s Grandpa Tom made a wooden horse for Chhimi when Chhimi was a young toddler. The same wooden horse has been kept in Bhutan for 30+ years, where each of Chhimi’s 10 cousins plus little brother has each had a turn to ride on it. Erik visited Bhutan when he was only 10 months old and he also got to ride on Daddy’s wooden horse. As a result, Grandpa Tom & Grandma Katy brought the horse all the way from Bhutan to the US just for their first grandson! We intend to keep it in current condition to pass it in the family as well!
