I can't tell you how much I love seeing good parenting in action.  To meet a young kid that is happy, outgoing, friendly, and willing to share his favorite toy without fuss.   A kid that is close to his dad and is being brought up with good values.  Last weekend we enjoyed the last days(?) of winter by hitting the slopes near our place.  Daniel saw another kid riding a snowracer and asked me if they could ride together.  Turns out  the kid was the nicest ever and the kids played the rest of the afternoon.
I hate bad parenting as much as enjoy hanging out with a good parent.  Seeing spoiled, obnoxious, selfish kids was for years partly a reason why we didn't have kids.  It annoys the crap out of me to see parents who don't really care what they teach the kids.  It can take some work to make a small child understand that being nice to others is a good idea.  But if you start early and lead by example, it will come automatically.
When I ask our new friend Nijo about joining him on his snowracer he agreed with a smile, glad to have someone to play with.  They tore up the hill in the sunny weather and couldn't stop laughing and smiling.  Nijo willingly took turns letting Daniel steer  and held on as hard as he could in the sharp turns.  I saw pure, innocent joy.  It was fabulous.
His dad was cool and it was obvious he enjoyed being out in the snow with his son just as much as myself.  This is a great thing about having kids, it's very easy meeting new people. Even in Sweden, home of the some of the stiffest and quietest people on earth.
We had a great time but finished off with a crash that sent the kids face first in the snow.  They were both wearing helmets but Daniel hit his lip and the blood was all over the snow.  The accident was quickly forgotten and turned into something positive when we iced his lip at night and talked about how nice our newfound friend was.  I knew Daniel realized exactly what I was talking about,  this is always the way he approaches a new friendship.

  1. I love how easy it is for kids to make new friends. We adults are always so wary and suspicious, but they just seem to accept each other.

It looks like Daniel is hiding a beehive hairdo under that helmet! Nice picture…glad everyone had a good time

  2. It’s always great to be around nice kids. You can also fairly safely assume that if the kid is nice, the parents must also be ok to hang around.

ahhhh….I wish we had snow in Brisbane!
