Weekend Photo – Mexican Women Making Progress

Pregnant Women, Please Park In This Spot

I saw this sign at a shopping mall in Mexico City and was impressed. You see, women are a best second class citizen's in Mexico. They are supposed to give birth, raise the kids (if there is no nanny around), cook, clean, and basically act as a hired servant at home. This is especially true of the older generation and outside the large cities. It's much like U.S., just a little worse. I see very little, if any, attitude change towards women in U.S. but I'm glad to say I see small signs of progress in Mexico.
The current generation Mexican women has already made tremendous progress. They are more independent, better educated, and have children at a later age than ever before. They are growing up with more modern rules and traditions. This is mostly in the larger cities though, the situation has changed little in the pueblos, small towns, around the country.
If you think child benefits in U.S. are poor, don't even look at Mexico or Latin America. There is no benefits at all and even if you have a good insurance chances are birth of your child will cost a significant amount of money. It's kind of weird to see since life is so much about kids and family here. They have succeeded in building close families and love for children but totally forgotten to build some kind of infrastructure helping families. That might not be surprising since the Latin countries hardly are are known for any kind of planning.
I think the Latins need a female role model/hero to speed things up a bit. They need to get many more publicly elected officials and dump a majority of the old corrupted men who are now in power. That's no easy task. But I can feel things slowly changing. I have seen several of these signs and even though they are not a big deal they might be a start of something.
I care about this because I've seen how great equality between the sexes is in a society. Sweden leads the way here and although we are no yet at 50-50, we are close. It's a waste completely shutting the doors for women in society, they have much to contribute and their different thinking can and will change the country for the better in Mexico.

I hate those parking spots. I was hoping that trend wouldn’t get to us but here it is.
Start with respecting the handicap parking posts and then we’ll see.
