Vacation in Göteborg Day 1

If you’re too bored to read about our Gothenburg vacation, here is a short summary of the whole trip: Nice town, very calm, plenty of hotels, good transportation to and around city, easy to get around with kids, nice kid attractions, lots of parks, and lots of rain.

We got up very early this morning, gave Daniel some warm milk and left town for Göteborg.  It took us about five hours on good highways but that is no problem for our super traveler Daniel.  So far we have done very few trips by car but many with long flights and jet lag.  So traveling by car is very nice for a change.  So easy to stop anywhere we like and not have to worry too much about what to bring.  Our plan was for him to continue to sleep in the car since he never wakes up at 6 AM.  No chance for that.  He was wide awake in the car but did sleep another two hours later on.  Sandra was driving for a change so daddy got to sleep for a couple of hours as well.

hakandanielgarden.jpgWe are staying at Scandic Crown which is pretty nice but not a luxury place.  There are very few if any, luxury hotels in Sweden.  In NYC we had 25 outstanding luxury places like Plaza, Waldorf, Peninsula, etc. but that doesn’t really exist here.  Hotels are very nice, clean and efficient.  They are like Swedish people, reliable and efficient but boring.  But the whole hotel is wired with Wi-Fi (wireless high speed Internet for those who are still living in the 1980’s).  And of course it’s free of charge as well.  Not bad.  Excellent reception and speed from all rooms and of course also public areas.  This entry is written from the lobby bar.  A beer and my computer, what else could I possibly need……?

Göteborg is a lovely town, second largest in Sweden, but still very small.  At least by our standards.  By my sister and parents standards it would be like going to Bombay.  Hectic, out of control, and lots of traffic.  But that is compared to the north pole where lots of traffic means three cars in front of you.  Trust me, it’s VERY calm here.  Lots of parks, restaurants, café’s, and small canal’s.  We walked around a bit today and then stopped for lunch while Daniel was sleeping.  Spanish tapas was on the menu and I rate them as pretty decent.  We walked around the most famous street in Sweden, "Avenyn", and took lots of photos.  Entered  "Trädgårdsföreningen" which is a large park in the middle of town.  Apparently dates back to 1842 and they had a nice play area for Daniel and a huge section consisting entirely of roses of all kinds.  There is some kinds of summer festival this weekend so there are party tents and concert stages everywhere.

The hotel has a nice play room for kids so while I fed Daniel and played with him for an hour Sandra relaxed in the room after our long day.  Daniel needs to be outside quite a bit every day to get rid of some energy  and not get too bored which we kind of accomplished today.  The last hour of playing made him fall asleep very easily at his normal 8 Pm bedtime.  New location, new bed, new environment, and he still sleeps well.  Thank God he’s such a good boy.

Pre-Daniel we always used to look up the best restaurants in a new town and enjoy superb dinner but that’s a bit tougher now.  It’s not fair to drag him along late at night so we usually do something easier.  Thai takeout tonight from the Thai Orchid was excellent.

Remind me to tell you a bit more about the Mexican people and how NOTHING ever can go according to plans.  Doesn’t matter what it is, it ALWAYS gets gets screwed up and ends in a mess.  Always.
