St. Lucia Morning Serenade

I love my son.  He's such a nice and happy child.  He definitely got that trait from his mother.  He's happy from morning to bed time.  I can't tell you how much that helps, especially in the mornings.  I'm awake before the kids every single day.  I get up around 6.30am while the kids sleep until 8am.   This morning, the whole family was strangely awake as I woke up.  This never  happens.  While I was in the bathroom I heard wife and Daniel argue about something.  I was ready to deal deal with some odd request from my son.  Like ice cream, standing on the ice cold balcony without shoes, playing soccer in the bathroom, or drawing on our white walls.  Turns our that my son was upset about our three month old daughter Annika not joining him while he played and sang to her. He wanted to kiss her, talk to her, play with his toys, and serenade her while she sat beside him in her baby chair. Like they always do in the mornings.

My son likes to sing, unlike his father, and sings like any 2 year old.  He makes up some words and has little rhythm.  But his group at school has been practicing some singing for the upcoming St. Lucia day. This ancient holiday, which originates in Italy, is celebrated in some countries in Europe.  Short background on Lucia:
Down the village street comes a small group of young people. At the head of the group walks a pretty girl in a long, white dress. Upon her head she wears a crown of green leaves and seven glowing candles. In her hands she carries a tray of little cakes. Behind her walk some younger girls, also in white, carrying candles. A number of boys in tall, pointed hats follow them.

The girl with the crown represents Saint Lucia, a young Christian girl. She was killed by Roman soldiers about fifteen hundred years ago for refusing to give up her religion.
If you ever have a chance to see this celebration, don't miss it.  A beautiful girl is chosen as the Lucia and the group sings in the most lovely way imaginable.  Every school, church, county, has their own Lucia and they perform in various places.  It's very common that they go around town for a whole day and sing for the less fortunate.  Like retirement homes and hospitals.  As they walk in, all lights are turned off, and Lucia walks in with candles in her hair while the group sing beautiful Lucia songs.

This morning my son wanted to serenade Annika with the Lucia song he's been working on at  school.  Or the very few words he remembered.  He asked mommy to be quiet and then proceeded to serenade Annika. After he accidentally touched her head with a furry animal, Daniel apologized to her. Sooo cute!   It was  a really nice sight.  I hope he keeps treating his little sister this well as she grows older.  She'll be a very fortunate little girl (Don’t be confused by the languages, it’s Swedish and Spanish….).

[…] Posted on Sunday 3 December 2006     Daniel In His St.Lucia Outfit    Canon EOS 20 D, 28-135 IS, EX 550 Flash, ISO 100   I love this photo of our son even though it looks like he just joined the Ku Klux Klan.  Don't worry, his outfit is what the boys wear during the annual St. Lucia celebrations.  It's  an ancient celebration which quite a few countries in Europe honor.  St.Lucia day takes place on December 13 and when Sandra and Daniel showed up late at school last year, without an outfit, the whole school was full of family members.  Parents, grandparents, and other relatives.  We had no idea it was such a big deal at school.  This year, Sandra is determined to have an outfit and for both of us to be there early with camera in hand.  The children have already been practicing the St. Lucia song repeatedly.  I even caught Daniel serenading Annika with parts of the St. Lucia song the other morning.  His singing is so-so but the thought was lovely.
