Norway – Sandra’s birthday and drive home

sandra-danielfield.jpgAugust 18th is Sandra’s birthday.  Birthday’s for her are very special.  She mentioned jokingly a couple of days before that "the most important day of the year is coming up".  I couldn’t care less about my birthday, New Years Eve of whatever the date is.  But I’m of course very boring, Sandra isn’t.

This birthday turned out to be something completely different than previous birthdays, and not really in a good way.  To make a long story short, we decided on leaving Norway a day early since Lupita (Sandra’s mom), Patricia, and Ximena (Sandra’s sister her kid) were coming to visit from Mexico.  We were originally supposed to leave later and have them spend a day alone in Stockholm.  But Sandra felt a bit bored by all the fresh air and beautiful views so we we decided on an early departure.  The night before we left Daniel didn’t eat that well and looked very tired.  This is very unusual.  He went to bed early and came over to our bed in the middle of the night.  At 4.30 AM he wakes up, moves around a bit in the bed, and then pukes on Sandra.  What a nice way to start your birthday.

I shower with him at 5 Am to get rid of the smell.  Go back to bed for a couple of hours, then get up and finish packing for the trip home.  He seems to be feeling better but doesn’t want to eat.  The trip home is around 725 km. and can be driven in one day without problems.  But we don’t want Daniel siting in the car for long periods of time so we count on lots of stops.  Once again we have to drive on the Norwegian E 6 with it’s 80 km. speed limit, retarded idiotic drivers, single lane, and speed cameras.  I pass LOTS of cars and we are doing good on time.  Daniel sleeps for almost two hours and then wakes up.  We take a break and eat some very questionable food at a cafĂ©’ next to Skarnes Lekeland (sorry about their horrible website).  This is a great place to stop with kids.  Their play land is heaven for anyone of age 1-7.  Daniel has a blast.

sandra-danielcloseup.jpgOut on the road Daniel Suddenly starts puking again.  Can’t be fun to puke all over yourself strapped into a car seat.  We pull over for a while, air out the car, and let Daniel run around.  This birthday is really not looking too good.  Thank God we are now driving in Sweden so the average speed is 30 km/h higher and people actually know how to drive.  After two more hours it’s time for more puking.  I quickly turn off the highway into a small road.  Turns out it’s the driveway for an older couple who are standing right next to the road.  They give us a very weird look and wonder what the hell we are doing on their little farm.  Daniel is crying and the puke is all over his clothes.  No worries.  He calms down quickly and the couple is very nice and asks us if they can help us with anything.  I apologize for the trespassing and we are soon on our way again.

Lupita and Patricia should now be at our apartment having picked up the keys from a kind neighbor.  We get no answer at home.  Turns out I unplugged the phone before we left and the Mexicans didn’t notice that.  Things have a way of getting screwed up when it comes to ravel and Mexicans but we are not really worried.  Turns out they are safe at our place.  It’s pitch black outside during the last part of our drive and we finally arrive home around midnight.    The driving went very well except for the puking.  Daniel has a fever so Sandra shower with him to get rid of puke smell and cool him down.  I unload the car which takes an hour because of all the stuff.  After a long day we are in bed by 1 Am.

Vacations are very nice but t feels great to be home.  This was for sure not a good way to celebrate Sandra;s birthday.  We we knew about it before and decide on just picking another day for a little celebration.  Thank God she’s so flexible.
