Like mother like son
Last night I was doing our nighttime routine with Daniel while Sandra was playing tennis. The basic routine is nothing complicated but works extremely well. Dinner, a little relaxing, a bath every other day, some Barney, warm "välling", reading and then sleep. Works like a charm every night. But last night something weird happened. And I blame Hot wife 100 %.
We have noticed lately that Daniel is understanding more of what we say. Despite being hit with three languages at once. So far he’s getting very few sweet things because we don’t want to get him hooked on sugar. But like most Latin’s, Sandra has a sweet tooth. The very first thing she does in the morning is to have a cookie. It’ s a semi-healthy cookie with a little chocolate so it’s not too bad. But as you know small children copy a lot of that their parents do. Good and bad habits. Daniel occasionally points to the little closet where Sandra keeps her cookies and every now and then he gets a small piece.
I was reading some new books to my son last night. Some books I actually borrowed from our super duper library. More on that later. It was a colorful book about a giraffe learning new words. So we’re going though the different pages which each describes part of the house with all kinds of objects and their Swedish names. We reached the kitchen and I start pointing toward the different household items. We continue over to the table which holds different foods. I point toward a large picture of cookies and say the Swedish word for it , "kaka". Daniel immediately becomes excited which is weird since he has not really recognized the word previously. He suddenly pushes the book out of the way and throws himself off the bed. He runs into the kitchen, and I really do mean run. I figure he’s thirsty but he’s not asking for water. I hear him shouting "ma, ma, ma" as he keeps running. "Ma" is of course Spanish (mas) for "more". I get into the kitchen and he’s by then standing in front of the cookie closet pointing excitedly. Damn Sandra! I quickly considered taking the easy way out and give him a cookie. But I didn’t. Cookie, sugar, and bed time usually don’t go well together. Fortunately our son is open for discussions so I gently pick him up while he continues saying "ma, ma, ma". I explain calmly that he can’t eat cookies now because we are going to sleep and 10 seconds later he agrees without complaints and we go into his room to sleep.
I’m very excited he’s learning new words faster but equally amazed that he’s so easy to reason with. What are the chances he listens this well when he becomes a teenager….?

It’s amazing what they choose to know and not know.
The sugar craving must be embdedded into the genetic code. My wife has an infamous sweet tooth. I had no idea it was passed on until we gave the Peanut a small taste of ice cream. It was like she had tasted baby crack! She thought it was the greatest thing ever.

Uh, not a chance.
