We’re Hit By A Mexican Earthquake
It's 1 Am local time and I just got shaken out of bed by an earthquake here in Acapulco, Mexico. Doors were rattling, the bed moved, and it was difficult at first to comprehend what was taking place. I jumped out of bed, checked on the kids, and immediately went to the balcony to look for traces of a giant tsunami wave. The current Mexican rumor, now a few minutes after the earth trembled, is a quake somewhere in the mid sixes on the Richter scale. I'm writing this from the balcony of our place, with the Baby Bjorn strapped on and the carriage ready, and so far see no signs we should run for our lives.
Do you remember the earthquake in late 2004 which caused the unbelievably devastating tsunami wave in Asia? The one where 275 000 ended up dying? I do, and that's why I'm staring at the ocean hoping I see no signs of the water getting sucked from the beach. As a coincidence, I was in Mexico during this time and remember how horrible I felt. The Mexicans clearly don't know what a tsunami was and the damage it can cause. They look like a question mark when I mention they need to observe the beach closely. Que?
Mexico has quite a few earthquakes each year, most of them minor. According to those I'm talking too, this one was stronger than usual, or perhaps the epicenter just made it feel stronger. The worst earthquake this country has seen in modern times was in 1985 when a 8.1 quake hit off the coast of Mexico and thousands of people died. It was actually one of the strongest ever in the Americas. This seems to be nothing like that so I'm calming down.
Thailand is a very popular vacation destination for the Swedes and we were hit very hard by the tsunami in 2004. To put into perspective how bad it was for our nation I could compare it to 9/11 where roughly 3000 people died. The tsunami took the lives of 15 000 Swedes when adjusting for the size of our country It was a big deal for us.
What made it so much worse where all the families and children affected. There were many families traveling home without a child or two and kids flying home after losing both parents. Just devastating.
I'm keeping my eyes open for water acting strange, it can take place long after the actual quake, but so far everything looks normal.
