Healthy And Dangerous Things For Our Children

Do you care "too much" about your child, perhaps overprotecting a little bit sometimes?  I see more and more parents overprotecting their kids today and I'm also guilty of it at times.  Gever Tulley has a short but interesting talk regarding kids and the many limits we parents put on our children.

Kids learn a lot by playing with all sort of different things and some of them can definitely be labeled dangerous if used incorrectly.  But they are also tremendously educational. Letting kids explore supposedly dangerous things is very much my parenting style.  There are no taboo's for my kids.  I let them touch, explore, and play with stuff some, like my wife, might consider crazy. Of course not recklessly.  Deep inside I'm a low risk guy but I don't think saying "No!" to everything is a good long term solution.  In my experience, it only leads to kids being even more curious of the "forbidden" items.

Check out the clip below by Gever or go directly to the site.  I think his talk is something very important for us parents to keep in mind.  How do we let our kids learn, explore, and get ready for the world without overprotecting them?
