Happy Birthday Maria Elena!

Today is our friend Maria Elena’s birthday. She is turning 40- something but surely looks like a 32 year old supermodel. We know Maria Elena, her husband Dean, and her sister Carlita from when we lived in NYC. The Latin people tend to stick together so we got to know Maria Elena through some other Peruvian friends of Sandra. We used to get together every now and then for parties and dinners. Maria Elena and Dean got this fantastic house in the Hampton’s and they would always be so nice and invite us over the weekends. For the past two years we have borrowed their house for a week in May and had a fabulous time. It’s so quiet and peaceful in the Hampton’s. Daniel loves their house. He’s got so much room to run around and the backyard is beautiful with plenty of space. Traveling with a toddler is not easy but their generosity has given us some very memorable vacations.

I really can’t say enough good things about our friends. They are extremely gracious and generous. Maria Elena flew down to Mexico City in November last year for the Baptism of Daniel and we had a nice time. Unfortunately she was only there during a weekend so we didn’t have time to show Maria Elena much of the city. Dean and Maria Elena are Daniel’s honorary God parents. I guess it’s not an official title but for us it’s no less important. They will be the guardians of Daniel in case both me and Sandra pass away. And that is something we really appreciate and value highly.

Today is Maria Elena’s day but I have to mention her great husband Dean as well. He’s got a bit of a geek interest which gives us something in common. We always end of discussing computers when we get together. He has been to Peru many times and mastered their national drink, pisco sour. He makes the best pisco sour in the world. He’s also a master chef and a wizard around the BBQ. Having some pisco sour and then enjoy some BBQ steak in their backyard during a sunny Hampton afternoon is something really special.
