Going back home on the best flight ever

After five weeks of vacation is was finally time to start heading back. Both me and Sandra (probably Daniel as well) couldn't wait to get out of Baja California after our disaster stay there. But we were a LONG way from home. First day we took an evening flight from Baja California to our base in Mexico City and packed our bags for our next leg of the trip. Next day we traveled the five hours to NYC which we expected to be a tough flight. Daniel is a superstar traveler and never gives us any problems but this flight was in the middle of the day and Daniel was full of energy. But we had a few extra seats, walked around in the plane, and spoke to some nice people so the flight was actually fine. We were at our hotel in Midtown Manhattan just over an hour after we landed which was surprisingly fast.

We had scheduled a day in NYC on the way back so we could do some last minute shopping and pick up all the other items we had purchased. We don't really shop in Sweden so all our stuff is bought in NYC during our regular visits. This time our biggest purchase was a Mountain Buggy Urban Jungle Double. We love the Urban Single we got now and an Urban Double is just what we need for our second child in August. We used it the whole day in NYC before leaving at night and the stroller is amazingly easy to handle. Can't wait to start using it for real.

We had an evening flight to Stockholm, Sweden, and were hoping for an easy flight and some rest. We've had many great flights among the 25 or so we've taken with Daniel but this one was just incredible. People took great care of the stroller to make everything easy for us and the flight was about 20% full. We had of course booked the bulkhead seats and also took a couple of extra rows. We took off and after Daniel read the safety instructions (how cute!!) I gave Daniel some warm "välling", took two seats for him, and put him to sleep. He was gone in 10 minutes and looked soooooo cute laying there with some blankets and the seatbelt wrapped around him. Sandra took a row of seats and tried to sleep immediately. I had five bulkhead seats by myself and watched a few episodes of 24 on my laptop, did some reading, and slept for a couple of hours.

Daniel slept and slept and slept. He did kind of wake of a couple of times after dreaming but fell right back to sleep. After 7 plus hours it was time to land and Daniel was still sleeping. If you've traveled a lot with your child you know the importance of decompressing when starting and landing. So I woke him up just before landing and made him drink some water regularly and suck his thumb during the last 20 minutes. What a great flight!! I wish they could all be like this!!

Even though we had a fantastic flight we were pretty tired and the jet lag usually takes a few days to get over. Lots of snow and fairly cold weather greeted us in Stockholm but it felt great to be back.

  1. That is possibly the greatest flight story ever. Sounds like you each had your own row. And I can’t believe Daniel crashed out for the entire flight. Don’t you love when the stars are aligned and everything works according to plan?

  2. Mate thanks for sharing so much of your holiday! I’ve been a bit slack on the comments I know….but I have a good excuse, a five week old pooping crying one!

Loved reading all your entires and hearing about all the cool things you guys did.

That is a great flight story BTW

  3. Hej AdventureDad!

  4. […] This was not a good experience but perhaps we deserve one of these trips every now and then. You know, just so we realize how lucky we've been until now. So far we've done around 35 flights, mostly long ones, with the kids and his is the first bad experience. The rest has been tiring but still very good.  I mean, who can complain about transatlantic dream flights like this one. […]

  5. […] memories with the kids? Our ratio of good/bad is currently 40 good and one bad. Most of our trips have been fantastic but we did have that one 24 hour nightmare difficult trip. But that’s the kind of experience […]
