New York City!

Our trip to NYC went fine as usual.  Daniel is such a superstar traveler.  Just amazing.  I had reserved the bulkhead seats which meant approximately three feet of legroom.  That comes in very handy when you are traveling with a child, especially a two year old full of energy.  Half way through the trip we took three empty seats and Daniel went to sleep for a  full four hours.  I had time to catch up on some geek reading and and watched the movie "Enron - Smartest guys in the room".  It´s a pretty amazing documentary, watch it if you can.  I was watching Daniel as he was slowly waking up.  After a few minutes he leaned over and hugged me.  Then he barfed on me.  Yep, he covered part of my shoulder with his stomach contents but   I managed to deflect most of it to a blanket.  Daniel was worried for about ten seconds but then came back to his old self and smiled .  After changing into his backup clothing we got ready for landing.  Then it was Sandra’s turn.  He leaned over and proceeded to barf  on her.  Most was deflected on the floor but she got some on her sweater.  At least he is fair and shares with both of us:-)) After landing we change into his second set up backup clothing so we wouldn’t stink too bad while taking a limo to the hotel.

We think he got some kind of stomach bug at kindergarten just before we left and is now getting rid of it.  He barfed a little at the hotel as well but nothing to worry about.  It seems like his system is about to recover.  Daniel has got an amazing immune system.  He rarely gets sick, we have been to the doctor for illness once in two years, and always seem to get a mild case of whatever is going around.   This is the first time he barfs in a plane.  We think thats pretty good considering he has done around 25-30 flight during his two years.  During all those flights he has cried one single time.  After being woken up by the captain during deep sleep he got scared and was unsure over where he was and cried for five minutes.  Except for that its been all smiles on every trip.  Thats why we call him a superstar traveler.

Sandra is still supposed to take it easy because of the pregnancy so I have mostly been taking care of Daniel.  He just loves the pulse of the city.  He strolls around the sidewalks just smiling and looking at all the interesting trucks and buses.  The ultimate treat is seeing a firetruck or police car, extra points if all the lights are flashing:-))  We kicked off the first day with a visit to the Central Park Zoo which is always nice.  It is small enough to cover in a couple of hours but still has plenty to see.  His favorites were the polar bears, spiders, and of course turtles.  For some reason he is fascinated by turtles and loves to look at them.  They’ve got a café on the grounds which unfortunately serves crap food.  Despite all the kids visiting they are far from kid friendly and the place feels like a run down diner.  If your kid is dying of hunger it will work but otherwise you should avoid at all cost.  The afternoon was spent at a playground just east of 49th and 1st.  Pretty uninspiring to play on asphalt but at least there were some other kids around and some basic playground equipment.  Then we decided on a visit to heaven,  ToysRus.  Talk about toy overload.  Daniel loved to look at the large dinosaur roar, observe all the toy demonstrations, and try out some toys.  He goes for two basic categories, animals (monkeys and dogs) and vehicles ) trucks, cars, etc.).   There are tons of different areas so we explored the whole store.  If you’ve got a few hours to kill I highly recommend it.  So far has not turned into a spoiled little shit, and doesn’t ask us for any new toys.  But we got him a couple of small trucks anyway.  Some new toys can really help keeping him occupied on the flights.  I have got so many good travel tips for new parents I think I must do a separate article or two on this subject.

We’ve got on more day together before  Sandra travels down to Mexico alone with Daniel.  I will be working, or at least pretend to, during the rest of the week before I join them in Mexico.  Nights in NYC are no problems, I have  dinners and parties lined up during the whole week.  I’m really looking forward to meet MetroDad on Thursday for some drinks.  We’ve never met but he sounds like a great guy.  I will try very hard not to bore him to death.  If you don’t know who he is, go to his website and enjoy.   He writes about various subjects but both of our blogs are of course focused on our children and about being a dad.

More about our NYC adventures tomorrow:-))
