Breastfeeding And Stomach Bugs
Fathers play a crucial role in a child's life. But every now and then I must admit that my role in parenthood is fairly unimportant and the mother is virtually irreplaceable. We're breast feeding our second child as we speak and it's always gone smoothly. But we've come down with a stomach bug down here in Mexico and the number one priority is to keep Sandra healthy enough to keep breast feeding Annika.
This really puts things in perspective. If I die or not is irrelevant, boobies must keep pumping milk. Annika is eating some tasting portions of real food but nowhere near enough to keep her happy. What do we do if things get really bad and my strong wife gets too weak to use her huge boobies? Margaritas maybe?
If you've breast fed full time before you know it's very difficult to get a baby use a bottle instead of boobies. Warm boobies full of milk beats a boring bottle any day. We struggled some getting Daniel to take the bottle as well and it was not until after 12 months that he skipped bobbies. We tried and tried but he liked boobies even more than daddy. Same thing with Annika. We've tried, although admittedly very hard, to get her used to the bottle. So far we've failed.
Breast feeding is really an incredible body function. Usually producing exactly the needed amount. If a baby is hungry more will be produced and as food take over, less will be available. And the benefits to the immune system are unbelievable. Wife is therefore priority number one at all times. We always schedule things so that her needs are fulfilled first, that way we're flexible with Annika's somewhat irregular eating schedule. That usually required some nagging from my side since the Mexicans can hardly be accused of over planning things.
For once, I'm recovering nicely ahead of wife. She's the one with an iron gut and I'm the one usually getting sick. But she's now running to the bathroom about as often as I 'm getting another beer. And that's often. We're trying to figure out what food got us this time but have been unable to isolate it. Daniel, my son with the unbelievable immune system, is totally fine so far. And Annika is doing better than ever after getting some medicine for her ear. Abuela is also doing fine, she rarely gets sick since she eats like a bird.
Wife likes to think of this bug as something positive since she's now below her pre-Annika weight. We're calling it "Diet Camp Mexico". So far our bug is a 24 our thing and it looks like we'll be alright tomorrow. Then again, who cares about me? The main thing is to keep those boobies pumping milk. My daughter is one high maintenance chic and she will be very unhappy if her favorite toys are out of order.

It sucks to get sick when you’re on vacation. I’m glad the rest of you are feeling better, and I hope your wife is feeling better soon.
Seems like a nice trip so far! I am sure your spouse will remember this sacrifice of yours and the payback will be worth it in some 6 to 9 months from now!
Have a look at dadbloggers.com, you might reckognize the location…
Beware of the payback thing… my friend’s husband is not allowed to drink for 18months after the baby is born because she couldn’t drink for 9months during pregnancy and another 9 or so for the breastfeeding period.
Watch out! :)
damn… I still have a huge amount of weight to lose – 10 pounds before i am anywhere close to my pre-pregnancy weight…
my son gave us a lot of trouble shifting to the bottle … but then the husband and i went on a holiday when he was down to one feed a day at 11 months… and left him with my mother. cold turkey. he started the bottle immediately and has been fine. lets see how i manage with baby bean!
We tried unsuccessfully to get our kids to take bottles, but by the time they did it was way beyond the time they should’ve had a bottle, anyways.
In our house, boobies definitely ruled.
Whew! I’ve been catching up on your blog. Your trip sounds like quite the adventure. The stomach bug sounds like a nightmarish hassle.
Thank you. Reading about boobies always makes my day. Well worth the read.
Sadly, all I take away from this post is that your wife is below her pre-baby weight… can one of you come over and spit on me?
Feel better!
my day isn’t complete unless i read the word boobies somewhere!!……thank you.
